Vietnam's waste plastic recycling industry has great potential for development. The demand for waste plastic materials in this industry increases by 15-20% annually. Despite the potential for development, the Vietnamese waste plastic recycling industry has not yet met the requirements.
Nguyen Dinh, an expert at the Natural Resources Media Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Vietnam, said that the average daily discharge of waste plastics in Vietnam is 18,000 tons, and the price of waste plastics is low. Therefore, the price of recycled plastic pellets from domestic waste is much lower than that of virgin plastic pellets. It shows that the waste plastic recycling industry has great potential for development. At the same time, the waste plastic recycling industry brings many benefits, such as saving energy for the production of virgin plastics, saving non-renewable resources-petroleum, and solving a series of environmental problems.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the two major cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City discharge 16,000 tons of domestic waste, industrial waste and medical waste each year. Among them, 50-60% of the waste that can be recycled and generated new energy is recycled, but only 10% of it is recycled. At present, Ho Chi Minh City has 50,000 tons of plastic waste landfilled. If these plastic wastes are recycled, Ho Chi Minh City can save about 15 billion VND a year.
The Vietnam Plastics Association believes that if 30-50% of recycled plastic raw materials can be used every year, companies can save more than 10% of production costs. According to the Ho Chi Minh City Waste Recycling Fund, plastic waste accounts for a large proportion, and the discharge of plastic waste is second only to urban food waste and solid waste.
At present, the number of waste disposal companies in Vietnam is still too few, wasting "garbage resources". Environmental experts believe that if you want to promote the development of the recycling industry and reduce the discharge of plastic waste, it is necessary to do a good job of garbage classification, which is a more important link. In order to improve the effectiveness of waste plastic recycling activities in Vietnam, it is necessary to implement legal and economic measures at the same time, raise the awareness of the people, and change consumption and waste plastic discharge habits.
