Sasol Polymers Sasol Polymers is the largest division of Sasol's chemical business and is Africa's leading producer of monomers, polymers (polypropylene (PP), linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), low density polyethylene (LDPE), polyvinychloride (PVC), chlor alkali chemicals and mining reagents. In addition to being a large supplier to the South African market, Sasol Polymers is also a major polypropylene exporter active in over 40 countries and four continents. Polypropylene overview Polypropylene (PP) is a highly versatile thermoplastic with an extensive range of applications in many industries. Its intrinsic properties of high stiffness, good tensile strength, relative ease of process ability and chemical inertness has resulted in PP being the polymer of choice in a wide range of consumer and industrial products. Annual global sales in 2003 were established at close to 38 million tons. Injection moulded PP has key applications in furniture manufacture, packaging, automotive, electrical and electronic appliances, housewares, toiletry items, cosmetic containers, toys and luggage. Extruded applications included pipe, conduit and twin wall roof sheeting. Film grade PP offers excellent clarity and low moisture vapour transmission with applications in the packaging of foodstuffs, textiles and a variety of consumer goods. Film PP processes includes cast, blown, multiplayer extruded and hi-axially orientated extruded film. PP fibres are used in carpets, clothing and non-woven, pressure sensitive tape backing and labels. A major application for the woven PP fibre is the replacement of sisal in woven bags, twine, ropes and string.
