The real goal was to develop the local manufacturing base in China, then do car assembly, then engineering ... until an entire car can be engineered, sourced and built there. This makes sense longterm, but the short term plan was to import the parts back into the US for assembly here, and the near term costs were simply overwhelming.

Our company quoted building a tool 2 weeks ago and our price was $32,000 when the China price came in they were only $4,000 less (this was specifying that they use the same quality components as us). By the time you add on shipping you jump another $2,000-$3,000. In addition to the shipping you have time delays in communication, proper communication, hoping they do everything correct, shipping time, etc, etc... The inherent costs are ridiculous. Companies do not consider this, they simply look at mold cost to mold cost. It doesn't make sense and I am glad that some are finally figuring that out.
